Lisa Marshall is a leading figure in nuclear engineering education, human capacity building, and student advocacy, currently serving as an Assistant Extension Professor and the Director of Outreach, Retention, and Engagement in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at North Carolina State University. With over two decades of experience spanning pre-college to graduate-level engineering education, Professor Marshall is a driving force in broadening participation, expanding access, and preparing the next generation of leaders for the nuclear science and technology sector. 

She served as the 70th President of the American Nuclear Society (ANS)—making history as the first Black woman to hold the role. Recognized nationally and internationally for her service and leadership, she sits on the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Nuclear Energy Agency Council of Advisers and chairs the global working group on Building a Pipeline of STEM Professionals. Her commitment to advocacy and educational access has earned her numerous accolades, including the American Nuclear Society’s Social Responsibility in the Nuclear Community Award and the NC State College of Engineering Champion Award. 

In addition to her administrative leadership, Professor Marshall is deeply involved in curriculum delivery, student mentorship, and international education. She teaches within the First-Year Engineering Program, developed an upper-level Energy Geographies course, and co-directed the Study Abroad Program in Engineering and Social Sciences, taking engineering students to locations such as China, Puerto Rico, and Colombia. Currently, she is a co-instructor for the Introduction to Engineering and Problem-Solving spring break study abroad in Prague. She also serves as Principal Investigator and Education Outreach Director for several U.S. Department of Energy-funded consortia, where she leads initiatives focused on nuclear energy infrastructure, consent-based siting, and workforce development. 

Professor Marshall’s academic background bridges geography, energy systems, and educational policy. She leads the NEO Research Group; a multi-university collaboration focused on engagement initiatives that attract and retain diverse talent in STEM. As a steadfast advocate for student success at NC State, she champions inclusive pedagogy, global perspectives, and holistic mentorship to ensure every aspiring engineer has the support and opportunities needed to thrive.
