Graduate Certificate in Engineering Education

About the Program

The Colleges of Engineering and Education jointly offer a Graduate Certificate Program (GCP) in Engineering Education. The program is intended for both working professionals, such as community college educators and working engineers who have teaching engineering topics as a part of their job responsibilities, and graduate students enrolled at NC State. Individuals who enroll in the program must have backgrounds in at least one field of engineering, applied mathematics, and/or engineering physics, and would select the program to provide distinction in their academic records that may improve career prospects. Students who wish to pursue a traditional engineering academic career may also choose to take the certificate to enhance their employability at a wider range of institutions and to prepare themselves for educating 21st century engineers.

The GCP will be attractive to individuals who work (or wish to work) in engineering education in academia or industry around the country. This includes engineering graduates who wish to become a tenure track professor and wish to bolster their teaching skills and engineering professionals who want to make a career transition from industry into academia. The course offerings have been structured such that students may tailor it to their individual goals.

Admission Requirements

Students must meet one of the two requirements for admission into the Engineering Education Graduate Certificate Program:

  1. Have a degree in an engineering field (or equivalent) from an accredited four-year college or university.
  2. Possess a BS degree in a non-engineering field AND have taken at least three undergraduate courses in statics/mechanics, electric circuit design, computer programming, introduction to chemical engineering, mechanics of materials, or similar introductory engineering disciplinary courses, and may include courses in the disciplines of textile, paper science, and biological engineering. Courses in applied mathematics and physics, or others, may be used to substitute for this requirement at the discretion of the EED graduate coordinator.

Program Delivery Method

We enroll both on-campus, and distance education students through Engineering Online (EOL) (including practicing professionals). Coursework is delivered on campus and offered simultaneously online, both synchronous and asynchronous.

Residency Requirements

None

Continuous Enrollment Requirement and Time Limits

After students are admitted to the Graduate School and enroll for the first time, they are required to maintain continuous enrollment. This mandates that students enroll each Fall and Spring semester, excluding Summer terms, until they graduate. Failure to maintain continuous enrollment results in termination of academic program. Exceptions to this policy may be granted in special circumstances by the Graduate School. Read more in Section 3.14 of the University Graduate Handbook.

All graduate certificate program requirements must be completed within four (4) calendar years, beginning with the date the student commences courses applicable to the GCP.

How to Apply

An application for acceptance into the GCP is required for all new students. Students must complete and submit the Graduate School application to be considered for admission to the program.

Those applicants who are currently enrolled in an NC State graduate degree program need only provide the graduate student Certificate Plan Data Entry form to their program administrator.

Application Deadlines

We accept rolling applications until the Graduate School official deadlines. There is no priority deadline.

Applicants should submit applications and all supporting documents on or before the Graduate School deadlines, listed below. Review the Application Section of the Graduate School Handbook for additional details.
